JMLA have built the practice around the principle of highly imageable city design and identity. We have undertaken substantial research in the last fifteen years through government research grants. We have investigated new and innovative techniques for creating outstanding public realms.
Fifty percent of our work is in rural and country areas, and our successful set-up shop consultation process has enabled us to develop a body of research related to community preferences, which we have been implementing in environmental design guidelines and in current construction projects.

JMLA have created design guidelines that have been in place for generations and have led to better urban places. Design guidelines and codes at Cleveland, Qld have led to one of Australia's best new urban compact regional centres. Building and signage guidelines in Atherton, Qld have allowed rural towns to retain and enhance its country town ambience. Rural planning guidelines for Pine Rivers have developed strong directions for all development types. Recently JMLA have been helping Defence Housing Australia to raise the quality of their living areas through guidelines and mediation with builders.
