Stanthorpe’s streetscape crafted with local arts

John Mongard Landscape Architects have rebuilt Stanthorpe’s streetscape over a period of over twenty years.

In 2015 a masterplan was developed for the whole town, and in 2024 the third project is now under construction, with completion within the next months. Stanthorpe has a unique dog-legged Main Street which holds an integrated precinct of shops and services with a unique character. Building on prior character and feel, The High Street Plan includes the collaboration of local artists, craftspeople, High School students.

Developed by an extensive JMLA run consultation and Set-Up shop process, the works include a new town Gateway with raised pedestrian crossing, disabled parking, local art and crafts, and mature trees.

The art-built in works aim to keep the town’s history and local creative culture alive.

Year 9 and 10 art students from Stanthorpe State High School and from St. Joseph’s High School worked with John Mongard and local artist Maggie Brockie to design and construct 16 linear metres of handmade granite and tile mosaics incorporating 36 different designs inspired by The Stanthorpe Nine, a group of highly endangered floral species endemic to the Granite Belt. John Mongard mentored the students through a design process to reflect a real-life design project, and the students and artists followed a professional brief.

Local potter Jennifer Gill worked with a residents group involved in a mental health support to develop a series of beautiful clay Totems to feature in gardens. The project will open in late 2024.
