Planning for future heat stress

The Kurilpa Street Tree Strategy was developed to fast track street tree canopy cover along the key pedestrian walkways in the inner city neighbourhood of Kurilpa, in Queeensland. JMLA worked with local community group Kurilpa Futures to map out sites and priority areas, and to identify easily planted tree locations.

The Strategy outlines the need to achieve tree canopy cover within the next ten years, as the climate moves toward a higher number of heat risk days, and periods of long hot summers. The first stage has been successful, and advance trees along Vulture Street, between the primary and High Schools, have been installed. The current action is to install canopy trees along the fast growth corridor of Montague Road, which is planned to accommodate an additional 100,000 people in the next thirty years.
