Bellingen enjoys a thriving community life which embraces both traditional rural folk as well as alternative and tree-change dwellers.
JMLA master planned a series of public place improvements for the whole town and assisted Council to get funding through the State Highway ‘Pedestrian Priority’ programme. JMLA planned a pedestrian-oriented town centre masterplan focused on safe crossings and avenues of subtropical trees to calm vehicle movement along the highway. The lush streetscape features local trees and wide gardens, built as part of further design works managed by Council. The town’s war memorial is now a gateway within a generous public space at one end of the Main Street.
