Toondah Harbour has been the subject of a heated debate about its future, particularly around recent development plans for intense highrise development adjacent to the Ramsar listed wetlands. The Walker development plan was called- in by the Federal Government in 2024 due to unacceptable environmental impacts.
Following a five month community-based planning and design process, involving consultation with residents and members of the Toondah Harbour Alliance, JMLA and a team of experienced consultants developed a Community Concept Plan for the precinct, reflecting the needs and visions of local residents, improving open space and community facilities, and respecting the unique local flora and fauna.
The plan includes concepts to improve the working harbour, which is run-down and presents as an chaotic and uncomfortable place to catch vehicular ferries and water taxis to Stradbroke Island. The Plan has been well received at local community events and was presented to the community at a public meeting at The Redlands Museum on the 19th February, 2025.
