Members and residents of three local Kurilpa groups collaborated on this revegetation project in Brisbane: The Kurilpa Commoners, Kurilpa Futures and The Highgate Hill Orchard group. They repaired a scoured bank and removed cats claw and other weeds, cultivated and then planted native riverine shrubs and ground covers.
Some key benefits of the community works include:
- stabilising the bank from erosion and flood impacts
- reducing maintenance and mowing to risky steep banks
- providing a native backdrop to the adjacent park spaces
- establishing local riverine plants to help create biodiversity and places for small birds
- using plants which belong to West End’s river banks: grasses, ground covers and medium sized shrubs
